Potty Training Tips for Your New Pup

Potty Training Tips for Your New Pup

Congratulations on the newest (and greatest) addition to your family! When you get a new furry friend, it’s only natural to want to spend all day cuddling and hanging out with them. Unfortunately, there are quite a few things you need to do as a new dog mom or dad to ensure that your pup stays healthy and well behaved. Not sure how to begin the training? Check out a few tips and tricks put together by our experts to help you become a potty training pro in no time:

Maintain a regular feeding schedule

While your new puppy is on the path to becoming a full-grown adult, young pups must eat more often than their adult counterparts. It’s highly important new dogs chow down at least three times a day. Sound like a lot of work? Don’t worry, the good news is that you can plan your pup’s meal times during your own!

Establish “Potty Time”

No owners biggest fan, but one of the most important to your house training rules. Your pup should be having “potty time” at least every 2-4 hours. If you decide to wait longer, your poor pup won’t be able to hold it. Setting a designated time and place for “potty time” will teach your pup that this isn’t something they can do whenever and wherever they want!

Exercise and Play

Ideally, you’re going to want to begin the day with some exercise prior to your pup’s first meal. After breakfast, try a walk around the block followed by play time. Be sure to repeat this routine throughout the day: exercise, meal, exercise, bonding time, and so on.

Reward a Job Well Done

Treats and a walk around the park will show your pup that they’re appreciated and loved. After all, training your fur friend isn’t the easiest of tasks and getting them accustomed to a new home can be quite the challenge. By creating a routine eating schedule, establishing potty habits and maintaining good quality health with exercise and play, your pup will grow up to be the best they can be!

Calling All Dallas Dog Owners: 5 “Paw-Fect” Dallas Dog Parks

Calling All Dallas Dog Owners: 5 “Paw-Fect” Dallas Dog Parks

While it may be time to say goodbye to another summer, there’s still plenty of time left to explore outside with your furry friends. Here in Dallas, we’re privileged to have sunny and cool temperatures through most of the fall and early winter season. So what better way to spend the day outside than at a dog park? From your traditional dog parks, to a more scenic or social option, we compiled a list of five “paw-fect” dog parks to visit in Dallas!

1. White Rock Lake Dog Park

White Rock Lake Dog Park is the ideal Dallas destination for four-legged friends and families. The park is separated into three play areas, with a double-gated fence around the entire park for extra safety. One play area is for big dogs, one is for little dogs and, to cool off, one play area features waterfront lake access and a fenced-in swimming zone. The park is closed each Monday for maintenance.

2. NorthBark Park

With more than 22 acres for off-leash play in North Dallas, NorthBark Park has plenty of room to let your pup run free. There are trails for exploring and an expansive lawn area. Water attractions include a “doggy beach,” a “doggy lake” and a “doggy pond.” Sounds fun for a hot fall day, right? Best of all, there are doggy showers to clean up after your adventures. NorthBark Park is closed on Tuesdays and on rainy days.

3. Mutts Canine Cantina

Not your usual dog park, Mutts Canine Cantina is truly a treat for dogs and their owners. Located in Uptown Dallas, Mutts has a dog park, a bar and a restaurant. The dog park is separated into two areas for small and large dogs. While your dog is busy running around with other furry friends, you can enjoy a nice cold beer, a milkshake or a burger on the patio. Mutts even offers dog “pawty” services, a party hosted for your pooch’s birthday or special occasion.

4. My Best Friend’s Park

Located in Klyde Warren Park in Downtown Dallas, My Best Friend’s Park is a great space for furry friends who want to explore the city. Dogs can be off-leash, to play with others or jump through the many water fountains. You’re also able to hang with your dog in the open spaces of Klyde Warren Park, sit at a park bench and grab something from the food trucks, but pups must remain on a leash when not in My Best Friend’s Park area.

5. Wagging Tail Dog Park

Wagging Tail Dog Park is a 6.9 acre off-leash park with an amazing observation deck that offers views of White Rock Creek and a waterfall. Fencing throughout the park marks play areas in and out of the sun, and for both big and small dogs. Also, there is a walking trail throughout the property. It’s closed on rainy days and on Mondays for maintenance.

What are your favorite Dallas dog parks? While we may not be able to join you on your adventure to the park, we love to visit your pups in their own backyard! Schedule a free poop scooping service at www.scoopsoldiers.com and allow us to rid your yard of pet waste!

The History of Pit Bulls

The History of Pit Bulls

Pit Bulls have been given a bad reputation over time, being deemed as aggressive and dangerous animals. However, if you look at their breeding history, you’ll find they’re designed to be the exact opposite. In honor of Pit Bull Awareness Month and Pit Bull Awareness Day on October 28th, we’re shedding some light on the history of the breed.

History

Pit Bulls are not one specific breed, but rather a category of breeds, including the likes of American Pit Bull Terriers, Staffordshire Terriers and American Bullies. Originally, they were created by breeding bulldogs and terriers together in an effort to combine the agility of a terrier with the strength of a bulldog. This breed gained popularity in the 1800s through a sport called “bull baiting,” a bloody, ruthless exercise which consisted of tying a bull to a stake, giving him 30 feet to move, and releasing dogs in an attempt to injure the bull. After bull baiting became illegal in 1835, the public popularized dogfighting, as it was easier to hide from law enforcement.

Over the years, many families brought home beloved Pit Bulls to protect the family and help with farm jobs. Interestingly enough, while these dogs were bred for strength and agility, they were also bred to be extremely gentle with humans. Famous dogs, including , helped create a favorable national opinion of the breed. Bud was the sidekick to Horatio Nelson Jackson and participated in the first cross-country road trip in 1903. To this day, Bud’s goggles are on display at the Smithsonian American History Museum. By the turn of the 20th century, Pit Bulls were known as “America’s Dog.” So where did it all go wrong?

By the time the 1980s came around, dogfighting rose in popularity in the United States. Additionally, Pit Bulls who participated in dogfighting were more often than not victims of pet abuse. Seeing these dogs in spiked collars on street corners caused fear in most people, with nationally known magazines, such as Time, covering stories of Pit Bulls baring their teeth and unfavorable, breed-related statistics.

Pit Bulls Today

Thankfully, in recent years, people have joined the fight for Pit Bull safety and rights. High profile cases of those who abuse their pets and partake in dogfighting, including football player Michael Vick, created national awareness of these awful occurrences. Not only during Pit Bull Awareness Month, but every day, we must remember that these dogs were not bred or born to kill, are not monsters, and have the same capacity to love as any other breed. Give them a chance, and they can show you what loving, goofy, and intelligent creatures they really are!

Here at Scoop Soldiers, we love furry clients of all breeds and sizes, including beloved Pit Bulls. If you’re in Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, Oklahoma City, Phoenix, San Antonio or Tulsa, contact us at (877) 930-POOP. Allow us to remove the dog waste so you can enjoy your pet and clean yard!

Famous Dogs We Love!

Famous Dogs We Love!

Throughout time, many dogs have risen to fame, through movies, social media, commercials or the Internet in general. While every dog is special in our book, we’ve picked a few of our favorites to share with you below! Learn more about these famous dogs who stole our hearts.

Tuna the Chiweenie

The first pup on our list is Tuna the Chiweenie. A mix between a Chihuahua and a Dachshund, Tuna was rescued in 2010 at a Farmers Market in Los Angeles as a four-month-old puppy. A year after Tuna’s adoption, his owner, Courtney, created the Instagram account @tunameltsmyheart. His exaggerated overbite and recessed jawline quickly caught the attention of Instagram users, skyrocketing him into doggy fame, collecting near 2 million followers to date.

Marnie the Dog

Marnie, a 16-year-old Shih Tzu who was adopted from a shelter at age 11, is definitely one of the most well-known Instagram pups. With over 2.1 million followers, Marnie is recognized for her tongue that is almost always hanging outside of her mouth, as well as her permanent head tilt due to a medical condition. She is known for her charming Instagram videos and is frequently photographed with adoring celebrities, including Ed Sheeran and Jimmy Kimmel.

Toto

How could we not put Toto on this list? Known for her adorable role in The Wizard of Oz, Toto, whose real name was Terry, was a Cairn Terrier born in the midst of the Great Depression. Her salary of $125 a week was frequently more than that of her fellow human co-stars of the time! Sadly, Terry died at the age of 11 in Hollywood, but there is a permanent memorial in her honor located at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles, California.

Boo the Pomeranian

Boo was one of the first dogs to make it big on the Internet. With his Facebook page garnering 17 million likes, Boo has been featured on red carpets and has even been called “the cutest dog in the world!” His iconic, fluffy haircut is hard to miss, and he can frequently be seen getting into mischief on his Facebook page. He has even had several books written about him – we’d say that’s one successful pup!

While there are loads of famous furry faces out there, your four legged friends will always be our favorite! If you live in Dallas-Fort Worth, Austin, Houston, San Antonio, Tulsa, Oklahoma City, or the Phoenix Metro area, contact us today to schedule your first poop scooping! Why Dog Poop Should Be Removed from Your Yard

Why Dog Poop Should Be Removed from Your Yard

Cleaning up after your dog is far from glamorous, but someone has to do it! Did you know that the majority of neighborhood pet problems stem from improper handling of pet waste? Consistent clean-up is necessary to keep you, your family and your community happy and healthy. Below we’ve highlighted some of the core dangers of leaving your dog’s droppings unattended.

Disease Prevention & Control

Contrary to popular belief, dog feces are not a lawn fertilizer and do not offer any benefit to your yard. In fact, your pet’s feces may contain multiple viruses and parasites, including hookworms, tapeworms, and campylobacteriosis, all of which are transferable to humans. Young children can particularly be at risk, as they enjoy playing in dirt where parasites often reside.

No One Likes a Poopy Yard

Make your yard more useable by picking up after your dog every 1-7 days, depending on the size and number of dogs in the household. If you’re afraid of using your yard for fear of stepping in some unexpected surprises, you will end up wasting one of the greatest assets of your home. Take advantage of your property by keeping it useable and mess-free.

Keep Your Water Clean

Dog feces have been ranked as high as third place on the list of contributors to contaminated water. Studies from the Environmental Protection Agency have shown two or three days’ worth of feces from a sample size of 100 dogs has the potential to cause enough bacteria to temporarily shut down large bodies of water within 20 miles. Don’t ruin a fun day at the lake for your community, be sure to pick up after your pup!

If the thought of picking up pet droppings is simply unbearable, let Scoop Soldiers do the dirty work for you. If you live in Dallas-Fort Worth, Austin, Houston, San Antonio, Tulsa, Oklahoma City or the Phoenix Metro area, contact us today to schedule your first poop scooping! As the top-rated pet waste removal company in the southwest, we’ll make sure your yard is clear of landmines so you, your kids and your dog all have a clean space to run and play.

5 Dog-Friendly Human Foods for Fido

5 Dog-Friendly Human Foods for Fido

When you’re in the kitchen cooking or eating a snack, do you have a little beggar by your feet, helplessly waiting for scraps? Many dog owners worry about giving their pets human food that may be harmful (looking at you, chocolate and grapes). We recently wrote a blog on all the dangerous foods to keep away from your furry friends, here.

Now, we’ve put together a list of “people-foods” that will keep both you and your pet happy and healthy!

1. Peanut Butter Is the Perfect Snack for Your Pet

Peanut butter contains many healthy natural fats and vitamins that can benefit both you and your pups. Plus, pets love it! Try stuffing your dog’s bone or toy with peanut butter to keep them occupied for hours!

2. Cheese Is a Healthy Medicine-Hiding Treat

Low-fat cheese is a tasty and wholesome snack for any furry friend. If your pet takes any pill-form medications, one sneaky way to ensure they swallow is to roll the pill into a ball of cheese, making medicine a tasty chore! As always, don’t go overboard with feeding your pup dairy. A little goes a long way.

3. Carrots are Loaded with Vitamin A for Fido

Carrots are the perfect healthy treat for your canine! Not only are they loaded with vitamin A and beta-carotene, they’re great for improving eyesight and maintaining healthy teeth in dogs.

4. Pups Love Crunchy Apples

An apple a day keeps the stink away! If your pooch has a case of stinky-breath, one way to refresh the smell is sliced apples. Pups love this crunchy snack! Just make sure the seeds are removed before giving it to your furry friend – they can easily become a choking hazard.

5. Oatmeal Provides Nutritious Fiber

A lot of dog foods on the market contain oatmeal for the beneficial fiber. If your pup needs to gain weight or is having trouble poopin’, oatmeal makes for a great solution!

While you and your pup share an afternoon snack, allow the Scoop Soldiers team to free your yard from pet waste. If you live in Dallas-Fort Worth, Austin, Houston, San Antonio, Tulsa, Oklahoma City, or the Phoenix Metro area, contact us today to schedule your first poop scooping! As the top-rated pet waste removal company in the southwest, we’ll make sure your yard is clear of landmines so you, your kids and your dog all have a clean space to run and play.

We are so sure of our quality pooper scooper service that we offer a 100% Iron-Clad, Money Back Guarantee. Our standard operating procedure is perfection, but when things aren't up to par, let us know and we'll come back and make it right for FREE. You are the sergeant, and you let us know when our work isn't to your standards.

Your dogs are your best friends - and they are the best part of your day. You love playing fetch, going for walks, and snuggling on the couch. In fact, there is nothing about your pups that you would like to change - except maybe all the poo they leave around your yard.

If we are being honest, all the mess left behind by your dogs can make the use of your yard a bit difficult. Having to watch where you step every time you want to play with your kids outside is like dodging landmines. And what is worse is that little slide you do when you accidentally plant your foot down in the wrong spot. Talk about ruining some quality time.

At Scoop Soldiers, we swing by your property, take care of cleaning up your dog’s business, and then we are on our way to engage in battle somewhere else. You are left with a beautifully clean, fresh yard to enjoy without worry.

Scooping pet waste is a part of pet ownership that doesn’t exactly bubble to the top of anyone’s list when bringing a four-legged friend home. Luckily, you have Scoop Soldiers on your side. Our technicians are highly trained, meaning we find all of the piles, big and small, in the yard, on the patio, and in the flower beds. At Scoop Soldiers we know that you’ll be so thrilled and delighted with our service that you’ll inevitably find yourself telling your friends and neighbors.

In fact, it may not even be necessary for you to tell your friends and neighbors since they’ll be able to walk carefree through your yard without slipping and sliding on a hidden trap. Your visitors won’t be the only one’s content with your cleared yard of course. You and your family will once again be able to enjoy your yard without having to watch where you roll, step, or sit.

Fortunately, the battle against pet waste is easily won with Scoop Soldiers. Our soldiers will stop by, enter your yard, scoop up the waste, and take it with them. The best part? You’ll receive a photo of your locked gate straight to your email after service, ensuring your fortress is secure.

I am so happy that I found this company. We have had the 2x weekly cleanup and quarterly sanitization service for about a year, and I couldn't be happier. They always show up and text before they arrive. Matt is professional and polite, and we always receive an email with a picture of our closed gate after the service is complete.
