Between vacations, pool parties, dog duo movie binging (never Marley & Me) and ‘paw’psicles, summertime is always a fun time for you and your pooch! With the sun-filled season, though, also comes 100+ degree days that make evening walks and dog-friendly patio lounging seem almost unbearable. Help your best pal beat the heat this summer with the following tips from our experts:
Keep fresh, cool water around. Place multiple water bowls around your yard in shaded areas. You can even throw in some ice cubes to keep it cooler longer!
Provide a shaded area. This might seem obvious, but the shade feels roughly 10-15 degrees cooler. Pro tip: Since they do not provide circulation, dog houses don’t fit this category!
Put a kiddy pool in your backyard. Since dogs cool from the bottom up, a shallow pool allows for them to effectively cool down. A cold, wet towel for them to lay on also helps!
Only exercise your dog in the early morning and late evening. These time periods are generally far cooler than mid-day. Bringing a portable water dish along is also a great way for Fido to beat the heat on walks!
Make some frozen treats. Did someone say “treats”? Get those creative juices flowing in the kitchen and make some frozen dog treats to keep your pooch nice and cool!
Consider giving your dog a trim. With certain long haired dogs, a trim might be beneficial during hot months! Be sure to always consult with your vet before going to the groomers.
Avoid hot pavement. If the pavement is too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your dog! Try to walk only on grass or invest in some dog booties to protect their paws.
Know the signs of heat stroke. Knowing the signs can help you identify when your dog is in need of help and prevent serious health problems!
