How to Keep Your Pup Hydrated During the Dog Days of Summer

The dog days of summer are the hottest stretch of the season, beginning in mid-July and lasting until mid-August. During this time, most people are much more active outdoors with their pups, taking them for longer walks, on dinner dates around town and more. Because of the sultry heat, it’s extremely important for both humans and pups to stay hydrated during the dog days of summer. Before you head out for a day of sunny adventure, learn how to keep your pup hydrated and healthy during summer:

Offer fresh drinking water regularly.

When you’re out and about in the hot sun with your pup, keep in mind that it can be hard to tell when your dog is in need of a refreshing drink of water. Regularly remind Fido that he has access to water by offering him a sip, as adult dogs should drink about one ounce of water per pound of body weight, according to American Kennel Club.

Keep frozen blueberries or ice in a thermos for your dog to chomp on.

If your pup isn’t a fan of frequently stopping the day’s adventure for a drink of water, consider filling a thermos with ice for a hydrating, crunchy treat for your Fido. Also, you can even freeze blueberries as frozen treats for your pup, because they contain lots of healthy antioxidants, fiber, water and more to keep your dog hydrated!

Keep a shaded spot for Fido.

If hiking is your favorite activity to do with your dog, it’s always best to explore trails shaded by trees rather than open fields with lots of sun exposure. Just like humans, dogs become dehydrated much faster in sunny conditions. However, if you are going to be in direct sunlight with your pup, consider bringing an umbrella or another means of creating a shaded space for your pup.

Feed your pup wet food instead of dry food.

During peak summer months, switching your dog from dry food to wet food will give him another source of hydration. If you’re unsure about the best wet food options, consider consulting your veterinarian about which are best for hydration.

We hope you and Fido have a safe, hydrated summer exploring trails, parks, lakes, beaches and more together.
